Cataract surgery

| | Share

Cataract surgery is the most prevalent procedure performed in America accounting for more than 2 million surgeries every year. Both the severity and irreversibility of cataracts and AMD have created interest in all the possibilities to hold off or postpone their advancement.

Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) type of eye surgery has been around for many decades now and the lenses are usually implanted during a cataract surgery to replace the natural lens of the eye. Years ago, these lenses used to help only with distance vision and patients needed to wear glasses for close vision. However, the method has been improved and now helps with close and intermediate vision as well.

During modern cataract surgery a small piece of the anterior capsule is removed in order to gain access to the cloudy interior of the lens. The art of cataract surgery is to remove this cloudy inner lens material whilst preserving the posterior capsule that lies behind it.

In some cases, the posterior capsule becomes cloudy after cataract surgery. This makes your vision blurry again, but it can be treated with a laser. The eye surgeon makes a small opening in the capsule to allow light to reach the retina as it should.

Green vegetables and corn - another study on ocular nutrition and eye health has shown a reduced risk of developing cataracts for persons having diets higher in lutein and zeaxanthin. Foods high in these two carotenoids include broccoli, collard greens, corn, green peas, kale, romaine lettuce, spinach, turnip greens and zucchini. Lutein is also found in egg yolks. Persons with diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin were also less likely to need cataract surgery.

Hale, both of whose parents lived to 91, has, in recent years, beat pneumonia and hip replacement and had cataract surgery. “No diseases, no nothing,” he exclaims, “except for some arthritis,” which is cured, he believes, with a teaspoon of bee pollen taken with each meal.

Only 53% of the people surveyed that they knew what polarized lenses were on prescription eyeglasses. The function of Polarized lenses is to reduce the glare. They are especially helpful to people who have just undergone cataract surgery and are very sensitive to bright lights. They are popular among boaters, skiers, drivers and any other hobbyist that the glare cannot only be annoying, but dangerous.

Deficiencies in color vision can also be acquired. Aging can produce subtle changes in color vision. The most common color change results from the development of cataracts, or “foggy” lenses in the eye, which interfere with visual acuity and color vision, making some colors dull, especially blue and yellow. After having cataract surgery where a foggy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens, people commonly comment that everything appears more colorful.

Although not as common, cataracts can be produced as a result of an eye injury or other physical trauma. A recent study of Iceland air pilots, proved that commercial airline pilots are three times as likely to develop cataracts as people with non-flying jobs. This increase in odds isn't completely known yet, but is thought to be caused by radiation coming from outer space. Cataracts is most commonly aided via surgery called cataract surgery.
